Kitesurfing in Dorset

Dorset is one of the UK’s leading destinations for kitesurfing, with the sheltered waters of Poole Harbour providing excellent conditions for learning and developing new skills. Sandbanks has become one of Britain’s best-known kitesurfing locations, combining reliable winds, shallow water and several professional training schools.

Whether you’re looking for your first kitesurfing lesson, private coaching or a BKSA training course, Dorset has experienced instructors offering tuition for complete beginners through to advanced riders. Most lessons include the use of a kite, board, wetsuit, helmet and buoyancy aid, although the equipment provided and course content vary between operators.

Unlike paddleboarding or kayaking, kitesurfing is a more technical sport that requires specialist instruction and should not be attempted without suitable training. Professional lessons provide the safest way to learn, covering everything from kite control and safety systems to launching, landing and riding techniques before progressing to independent kitesurfing.

Kitesurfing Lessons in Sandbanks

Sandbanks is widely regarded as one of the UK’s premier kitesurfing locations. The extensive shallow waters of Poole Harbour provide an excellent environment for learning, while the harbour’s open spaces and consistent winds allow riders to develop their skills under professional supervision.

Most lessons take place within designated areas away from busy swimming beaches and are scheduled around suitable wind and tide conditions. Because kitesurfing depends on the weather, lesson times may occasionally be adjusted or postponed if conditions are unsuitable.

Best Places to Kitesurf in Dorset

Sandbanks and Poole Harbour

Sandbanks is widely regarded as Dorset’s premier kitesurfing destination and one of the best places in the UK to learn the sport. The sheltered waters of Poole Harbour provide extensive areas of relatively shallow water, allowing beginners to develop confidence while remaining under close supervision from qualified instructors.

The harbour also attracts experienced kitesurfers thanks to its reliable wind conditions and large areas of flat water that are well suited to freeriding and practising new skills. As Poole Harbour is a busy working harbour, riders should remain well clear of navigation channels, ferries and other water users, and always follow local guidance and any restrictions that apply to launching and landing.

Portland Harbour

Portland Harbour is another of Dorset’s leading kitesurfing venues and is popular with intermediate and advanced riders. The harbour’s large sheltered waters provide excellent conditions for improving board control and riding technique, while stronger winds can create fast, flat-water conditions favoured by experienced kitesurfers.

Independent riders should familiarise themselves with local access arrangements before launching, as Portland Harbour operates under specific harbour regulations. Beginners are advised to learn with a qualified instructor rather than attempting to ride independently.

Weymouth Bay

Weymouth Bay offers a more exposed kitesurfing experience than either Poole Harbour or Portland Harbour. Depending on the wind direction, the bay can produce larger waves and choppier conditions, making it more suitable for experienced riders.

During the summer there may be restrictions on kitesurfing from some sections of Weymouth Beach because of the large number of swimmers and other beach users. Always check local restrictions before launching and choose a suitable location for the prevailing conditions.

Ringstead Bay

Ringstead Bay is a quieter and more secluded location that attracts experienced kitesurfers looking for open-water conditions away from the busier beaches. The bay can produce good wave conditions in favourable winds but is considerably more exposed than Poole Harbour.

Because of the remote location, deep water and lack of organised safety cover, Ringstead Bay is best suited to confident riders who are experienced in self-rescue and open-water kitesurfing.

Before You Go Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing is a physically demanding sport that requires specialist instruction and should not be attempted without suitable training. Complete beginners should always learn with a qualified instructor using appropriate safety equipment before attempting to ride independently.

Before each session, check the weather forecast, wind strength and tide times carefully. Wind direction is particularly important for kitesurfing, and conditions that appear suitable on the beach can change quickly. Lessons may be postponed if the wind is too light, too strong or blowing from an unsafe direction.

Wear the safety equipment provided by the kitesurfing school, including a buoyancy aid, helmet and wetsuit where appropriate, and make sure you understand how to use the kite’s quick-release safety systems before entering the water.

Take a fully charged mobile phone in a waterproof pouch if possible, and let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. Never attempt to launch or land a kite in crowded areas or close to swimmers, and always give other water users plenty of space.

Poole Harbour is used by ferries, sailing boats, motorboats, paddleboarders and kayakers, so remain well clear of navigation channels and follow any instructions provided by your instructor or the harbour authorities.

Many kitesurfing schools operate seasonally and lessons are highly dependent on suitable wind conditions. Equipment availability, opening times and prices are subject to change, so it is always worth checking directly with the operator before travelling.
