Best Places to Go Kayaking in Dorset

Sandbanks and Poole Harbour

Sandbanks is one of Dorset’s best kayaking destinations for beginners. The sheltered waters of Poole Harbour are generally calm, there are several slipways providing easy access to the water, and the harbour remains shallow close to the shore. More experienced paddlers can explore further into the harbour or kayak around Brownsea Island when conditions are suitable.

Poole Harbour is a busy working harbour with ferries, leisure craft and commercial vessels. Always remain clear of navigation channels and follow any advice given by your hire provider.

Studland Bay

Studland Bay offers a more adventurous coastal kayaking experience. Knoll Beach and Middle Beach provide excellent launch points, with spectacular views towards Old Harry Rocks and the chalk cliffs of Handfast Point.

In calm weather, experienced paddlers can kayak around Old Harry Rocks, one of Dorset’s most iconic natural landmarks. As this is an open stretch of coastline, weather and sea conditions should always be checked before setting out.

River Frome, Wareham

The River Frome offers peaceful inland kayaking through one of Dorset’s most attractive river landscapes. The slow-moving water makes it ideal for beginners, families and anyone looking for a relaxed paddle surrounded by countryside and wildlife.

Unlike the coast, there are no tides or waves to contend with, making it one of the easiest places in Dorset to gain confidence on the water.

Lulworth Cove

Lulworth Cove is one of the highlights of kayaking along the Jurassic Coast. The sheltered horseshoe-shaped cove provides an excellent starting point, while experienced paddlers can continue east towards Mupe Bay or west towards Durdle Door and Man O’ War Beach.

This stretch of coastline is exposed to changing sea conditions and should only be attempted by confident paddlers when the weather and sea state are suitable.

Portland Harbour

Portland Harbour is one of the UK’s premier watersports venues. The large expanse of comparatively sheltered water provides excellent conditions for kayaking lessons, guided trips and skills development.

The surrounding coastline also offers opportunities for more advanced sea kayaking, including guided trips exploring Portland’s cliffs, rocky shoreline, sea caves and secluded coves.

Before You Go Kayaking

Before setting out, always check the weather, wind and sea conditions, particularly if you plan to kayak along the open coast. Conditions can change quickly, even on days that appear calm, and stronger winds can make returning to your launch point much more difficult.

Always wear the buoyancy aid provided by the hire company and dress appropriately for the weather and water temperature. Listen carefully to the safety briefing, remain within any designated paddling areas and ask about local hazards, tides and navigation channels before leaving.

Take a fully charged mobile phone in a waterproof pouch or container, and make sure someone knows where you are going and when you expect to return. For longer coastal trips, a whistle and another suitable means of attracting attention are also sensible.

If you are kayaking on the sea, keep well clear of ferries, motorboats and other vessels, and avoid busy shipping channels. Less experienced paddlers should stay close to shore and only attempt longer coastal journeys, such as around Old Harry Rocks or between Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, in suitable conditions or as part of an organised guided tour.

Many kayak hire centres operate seasonally and may close during poor weather. Equipment availability, opening times and prices are subject to change, so it is always worth checking directly with the operator before travelling.
