Mapperton House is the home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich. It is a magnificent Jacobean manor house with an Italian-style valley garden set amongst the rolling Dorset countryside.

Side note: If, like me, you’re not sure what Jacobean style is, it means relating to the reign of James I of England (r 1603 – 1625). James I of England had previously been ruling Scotland since 1567 as King James VI of Scotland (James Charles Stuart). When he succeeded the throne it unified England and Scotland under one ruler for the first time which it has continued to do until the present day. It was also the start of the Stuart period of British history which lasted from 1603 – 1714 and followed the end of the Elizabethan era (Elizabeth I) which marked the end of the Tudor period. So now you know.
In 2006 the house was voted the “Nation’s Finest Manor House” by Country Life magazine. The Manor House has been used as a location for several films including the 2015 version of Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd
