Athelhampton House is one of England’s finest Tudor manor houses, located about five miles north-east of Dorchester. The estate was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, while the present house was built around 1485. Today it remains one of Dorset’s best-preserved historic houses, surrounded by beautiful formal gardens, parkland and woodland.
Inside, visitors can explore a series of beautifully furnished rooms containing antique furniture, paintings, tapestries and carved oak interiors. The house has been carefully restored over the centuries while retaining much of its medieval and Tudor character.
Outside, the formal walled gardens are among the finest in England. They are famous for their yew topiary pyramids, herbaceous borders and colourful seasonal displays of tulips, roses, magnolias, lilies and clematis. Visitors can also see the historic 15th-century dovecote, walk beside the River Piddle and enjoy views across the surrounding Dorset countryside.

Athelhampton House
Construction of Athelhampton House began in the late 15th century during the reign of Henry VII. Over the following centuries it was enlarged by successive owners while retaining its distinctive Tudor appearance. The house has remained remarkably intact and is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved Tudor manor houses in the South West.
Many of the rooms feature impressive timber roofs, carved fireplaces, historic furniture and portraits, giving visitors an insight into life in an English country house over several centuries. The Great Hall remains one of the highlights of any visit, with its magnificent hammerbeam roof and medieval atmosphere.
The house has also featured in television documentaries and period productions thanks to its remarkably preserved architecture.
Athelhampton Gardens
The gardens are a major attraction in their own right. Redesigned during the late Victorian period by architect Inigo Thomas, they are regarded as one of the finest examples of formal Arts and Crafts gardens in England, combining Italian-inspired design with traditional English planting.
Visitors can wander through a series of enclosed garden rooms linked by pathways, fountains and clipped yew hedges. Throughout the year the gardens provide changing displays of flowers and shrubs, while the wider estate offers peaceful woodland walks and riverside paths.
